Hello, and welcome!
I’m Anna-Maria Montonen — an Estonian-born designer and artist, currently living in Austria. My work moves between design, film, movement, and landscape, guided by curiosity, embodied experience, and a deep connection to nature.
With a background in product design from the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Zurich University of the Arts, my path gradually shifted toward film and dance. Years of intensive movement research and workshops, particularly in Belgium with teachers such as David Zambrano, Martin Kilvady, and Linda Kapetanea, shaped the way I understand the body as an expressive, sensing, and thinking medium.
As an outdoor enthusiast spending long periods in glacial landscapes, I began filming and photographing dancers on glaciers — creating a body of work in dialogue between human movement and a rapidly melting landscape. This practice has evolved into a ritual, a ceremony, a way of listening to the land through the body.
The work culminates in multisensory exhibitions and installations, where film, photography, sound, and spatial experience invite the audience to immerse themselves in glacial presence — not as distant scenery, but as something felt, intimate, and alive.
Across all mediums, I’m drawn to projects that blur boundaries, invite presence, and create spaces where art, body, and environment meet.
